New Song on MP3.com!!! [Fri, June 27, 2003 @ 12am CST] by: joel
Well... Soon enough. We have put our newest song, Haunted, to be uploaded to MP3.com!!! Keep checking the page and it will hopefully show up in a week or so. We hope that MP3.com will be quick about it, but we did our part. Haunted will be included on our new cd, so this is a preview of things to come! We wanted to put up another song on MP3.com from the old days when Gary and I did our acoustic sets, but we are having some small technical difficulties with that recording. Once we get that worked out, this song and Haunted will be 2 new tracks for you to grab off the site!
Enjoy!
-Joel | So what are they doing, anyway? [Mon, June 23, 2003 @ 9pm CST] by: nick
Hey everyone,
Like Joel said in his last post, our most recent show has been cancelled and we have no more on the immediate horizon, so you might be wondering... what the heck are they doing, anyway?
Well, thank goodness you asked, cuz the answer is "we're gonna record like nuts." We laid down preliminaries for our new demo back in May (as you might have noticed from prior posts), and we're gonna be hitting up another session here in the next few weeks.
So, since we're all being patient with me due to my hectic summer schedule, let me promise you this - by the end of this month (June) we will post a new song on mp3.com. Please do stay tuned, and if you haven't already, check out all the awesome pictures we've got in the photos section now. A ton of thanks to our web man Andrew for all the helpful lovin'.
Peace out all,

Once again, we also have a show this coming Saturday, June 21, 2003. You can print out a flyer, which gets you a dollar off admission for the show from the show section of our website. This may be our last show for a while before we start focusing on finishing up our new cd, so come out and rock out! Doors open at 10, show starts at 10:30, I hope to see you guys there, bring an ID or 2 because you have to be the ever so old age of 17 to get in!
Peace all

-Joel | Tonight's Show [Thu, June 05, 2003 @ 6pm CST] by: nick
Hi Everyone,
Don't forget that we have our show at the Wheaton Grand Theater tonight, June 5th. We'll be taking the stage at 7:45, so head on out to Wheaton and let the good times roll! The address of the place is: The Wheaton Grand Theatre,
123 N Hale St. Wheaton, IL We'll always post addresses of our shows under the "Tour Dates" link, which you can click on at the top of the page. I'd advise using mapquest if you're unfamiliar with the area, since most of the time these places are as new to us as they are to you - so we don't always have driving directions from all locations.
So, we look forward to seeing you all out there tonight. Come watch us rock!
-Nick | Something Ordinary Opens the Show!! [Tue, June 03, 2003 @ 12am CST] by: joel
Hey Everybody!
Yes, as the title says, Something Ordinary is playing first, at 7:45 on Thursday, June 5. We are more than happy to be the first band playing for these other fine local Chicago bands. We all hope you guys can make it out so that we can show these other bands that Something Ordinary knows how to bring in the people!
Don't forget, our next show is on June 21 at Superbowl! The only way that we will get any money from the show is if you wonderful people are able to bring a copy of the flyer that will be on our web page and will be handing out. You can get a little more info in the tour dates section, and we will always fill you in with more details as the show gets closer.
We appreciate all your support!
-Joel | News About the June 5 Show [Wed, May 28, 2003 @ 12am CST] by: joel
Here's a little extra info about the June 5 show:
The bill for the night is: Something Ordinary Amici Drawing a Blank Myllhouse
It should be a fun time! I've actually wanted to see these three other bands for a while, and I'm excited that we get to play a show with these guys! I'm pretty sure that it is going to be a $5 cover charge to get in, but I know it will be well worth it. It's an all ages show so I hope that a ton of you guys can make it! We will have more shows coming up, so don't wear yourselves out because you got a lot more shows to come to!
-Joel | Recording Update [Fri, May 23, 2003 @ 2am CST] by: nick
Hey Everyone,
Recording this past week has been coming along really well. We've got 3 of the 4 songs (Backseat, Love to Bear, and Haunted, with Enough in the works) we were targeting done, and hopefully within the next week we'll finish updating Let Me and Burden as well. I'm really really really pumped about the way Haunted is sounding, so you all will have to check that out when our new demo is released. We're unsure of the specific price it's gonna be (we're going to have this one professionally pressed), but we will be offering a sort of trade-in deal with your old demos, so don't fear - think of that old SO demo as a buck. You can bring it with you to any of our upcoming shows and trade it in for a dollar off our new demo. I can't promise the new demo will be ready for the June 5th Wheaton show, but we should definitely have it by late June.
We'll also be replacing the old versions of Backseat and possibly Let Me on mp3.com within the next few days, so check that out as well. Also, pictures should be coming soon to the site, so stay tuned.
Peace out all,
-Nick | SO Update [Mon, May 19, 2003 @ 12am CST] by: joel
What's up Everybody!
Today we started working on some new recordings so that we can have a new demo to debut at our next show! We are reworking some old songs as well as recording 2 new songs. New shows are in the works... I am excited and I hope all of you are as well for a good summer of Something Ordinary music!
Even though Nick already said it, I would also like to say how much fun it was to play at Joy Blue! Thanks to all of you that came, you were an amazing crowd and I hope you can continue to show Something Ordinary love and come check us out on June 5!
Take care all,
-Joel | Joy-Blue Last Night [Fri, May 16, 2003 @ 1pm CST] by: nick
Hi Everyone,
A huge thanks to everyone who came out to Joy Blue last night to make it such a huge success. I speak for all of us when I say it was a great time, and I hope you all enjoyed it just as much. Something Ordinary has the best fans ever.
As you can see from the Tour Dates page, our next upcoming show is June 5th at the Wheaton Grand Theater. So far, I think we're slated to play with Amici, but I haven't been informed who the 3rd band that's playing with us will be yet. I know it's a long drive for some of you, but it should be a ton of fun, and I've heard good things about how cool the venue is, so come check us out.
Also, we're gonna be recording this weekend, so depending on how much we get done, we may have new demos for you on the 5th. Stay tuned ladies and gents.
-Nick | Joy Blue [Tue, May 13, 2003 @ 11pm CST] by: nick
Hi Everyone,
As you can see from Joel's post, we are playing a bar called Joy-Blue this Thursday, May 15th. We should be going on around 8:30ish, and playing for about an hour. The cover for just us is $5, and for a three hour open bar, it's an additional $15. So, come watch us rock it out!
Getting there should be relatively easy: it's on the corner of Irving Park and Southport. Since it's on the corner, it has 2 addressess: 1403 W. Irving Park Rd, and also 3998 N. Southport Ave. For directions, I'd recommend mapquest. You can just copy and paste the addresses given above. The zip code for that part of Chicago is 60613-2606.
Thanks in advance to all who come. It should be a ton of fun, since hey, we're mixing alcohol and music.
Late

Hi Everyone,
I'm sure you all have been hanging tight to the edge of your seats expecting updates to the site. Wait no more! Updates to the site have been made - the bios are now available, and our next few gigs have been posted.
So, enjoy your stay on the Something Ordinary website, read the bios, hit up the guestbook, and keep rockin.
ps., we've also got a ton of pictures from the Atrium show coming. Stay tuned.
-Nick | UIC Atrium [Mon, May 05, 2003 @ 12am CST] by: nick
Hi Everyone,
We'd like to send a huge thank you to everyone who came to our show tonight at the UIC Atrium - the show went along really well. Despite the difficulties in acoustics the atrium presents (mainly it being a big octagon), I think we had a pretty full sound and I definitely enjoyed playing there. We'd also like to send an extra special thank you to the UIC Res Hall Association for asking us there to play. It was fun times to be had by all. The karaoke was crazy afterwards as well.
I'd like to mention that we do have a few upcoming shows, and that follow-up info on them will be posted shortly (I promise on this one), the first of which is going to be at a bar called Joy Blue. The show is slated for May 15th, and we will start playing at either 8 or 9. The specifics aren't all nailed down yet, but directions will be posted within the next couple days. I think it's $5 cover to see just us, and $10 more if you want a 3 hour open bar (I'm not positive, so don't get all excited yet). In either case, it'll be a chance to rock a bit and have some drinks all in the same night.
I'd also like to apologize for the lack of updates on the site - I assure you all we're working hard. Our friend and webmaster Andrew is getting married in July, so he's extremely busy with planning as well as schoolwork and such. We also had a server problem a few days ago that knocked out one of my posts and a few guestbook entries, so if one of those were yours, we'd love to see you repost (or post even if yours didn't get erased!). Additionally, we'll be hitting up the studio a bit in the next few weeks, so we should have a new demo available pretty soon.
So, once again, thank you all for coming, hope you enjoyed the show, and have a good one!

| Valparaiso Radio [Sat, April 12, 2003 @ 2pm CST] by: nick
Good Afternoon Everyone,
Last night's radio show at Valparaiso's 95.1 was a great time! The show went along really well - we'd like to send a thank you to the underground radio family for having us there.
One of the DJ's who was gracious enough to have us is guitarist for the band Amici - we got the chance to hear some of their stuff while we were down there, and it's quality. They're playing a show at Metro April 27th with Swizzletree and Full Range, so check it out. Joel and I will be going. Hopefully some date in the future you will see Amici and Something Ordinary on the same stagebill.
The bios should be up soon, as well as more pictures of the band. Keep tuned, folks, we've got a lot in the works.
-Nick | Karl [Fri, April 11, 2003 @ 3am CST] by: nick
Hi Everyone,
As many of you noticed, onstage at the battle of the bands there were not just 3 of us Something Ordinary members, but 4. Our 4th man up there was Karl Paulsen, our new bassist! Gary, Joel and I would all like to give Karl a huge welcome. Also, we're doing a radio show at Valparaiso tomorrow afternoon. We're staying active, working on new material and looking forward to getting back to recording. We'll soon be setting up shows at bars in the area, as in about 2 weeks I'll be *gasp* 21!
Keep checking the site for more updates, and also pictures of Karl and our bios should be up here really soon. Take care all.
-Nick | UIC Battle of the Bands [Fri, March 28, 2003 @ 1am CST] by: nick
Hi Everyone,
First of all, we would all like to send an ENORMOUS thank you to EVERYONE who came - you guys made the difference. I'm extremely pleased to announce that Something Ordinary won the UIC Battle of the Bands - with the prize money, we'll have the potential to explore a variety of new opportunities. We're looking into studio time to produce a new demo, as well as promotional stuff like stickers and T-Shirts. I think I got at least 10 requests for a "Joel's number 1 fan" shirt.
Also, the battle gave us the opportunity to network a bit with other bands. I was very impressed by each band - all played well, and were friendly guys. There was a very diverse group of sounds today. Be sure to check out Triptych, AKA, Ophur, and Abitwar's pages - they're all very solid bands.
Once again, I'd like to stress how much all four of us appreciate the support. The love of our friends is as much as any of us can ask.
Take Care All,
-Nick | The Battle of the Bands [Tue, March 25, 2003 @ 7pm CST] by: nick
Hi Everyone,
I've got the specifics for the UIC Battle of the Bands. The show is this Thursday, March 27th. The doors open at 6, tickets will be 5 bucks. We go on around 7:30ish, so try to be there around then. Come cheer us on! It should be a lot of fun, each band is allowed a half an hour set, so we're jamming as many songs in as we can.
Also, if you haven't already, to get a taste of what's coming, you can download the full versions of two of the songs from our demo from mp3.com. Backseat and Let Me are up there, with others soon to follow. We should be hitting the studio with two songs pretty soon. One is a new song called Haunted, and the other is an updated, reworked version of an old favorite of Joel and Gary's called Love to Bear. Keep your eyes peeled for updates on the site and come check us out at the battle!
-Nick | Updates on mp3.com [Tue, March 11, 2003 @ 12am CST] by: nick
Ladies and Gents,
I'm pleased to say that "Let Me" is now available for download at mp3.com! Also, I've found out the other two bands we're playing with at UIC's Battle of the Bands are Triptych and Misguided Youth - go check them out.
Again, the show is March 27th, so clear your schedules. Directions and further info will be posted soon.
-Nick | UIC Battle of the Bands [Mon, March 03, 2003 @ 1am CST] by: nick
Each year, some 20-30 UIC bands submit entries via CD or tape to the UIC Battle of the Bands. Only 5 or 6 of those bands are selected to compete in a one-evening event that decides who is the most popular band at UIC.
This year, I am proud to say that Something Ordinary has been invited to play this event. It provides us with a great setting to get connected with other local bands, as well as giving all of you a cheap way to see us gig it with some of Chicago's best up-and-coming local artists. A couple of the other bands we will be playing with are Metro/House of Blues regulars - namely, Ophur and AKA.
The specs: The show is slated for March 27th, which is a Thursday. The time has yet to be announced, and will be posted as soon as we know. In previous years, the show has been held in the Illinois Room of the CCC on campus at UIC. I'll post an update later confirming the time and location.
So, come cheer us on, bring your friends, and have a good time. Also, keep an eye out for new features on the site - many thanks to Andrew, our web man, who has been doing a great job of keeping the updates coming.
-Nick | Back Again [Tue, February 25, 2003 @ 3pm CST] by: band
